This work presents the pulverized remains of a brick pressed into an imposing black surface. It evokes the charred walls and rubble that remain after the destruction of a home. Each grain of crushed brick speaks to the stark reality of displacement, destruction and the loss of security that was once found between solid walls. The process was intentional: a building brick, normally meant to protect, was destroyed with a hammer and its fragments mixed with modeling paste and acrylic paint. “Black House” becomes a visual document of the remains left behind, confronting the viewer with the harsh reality that many people face: the lack of a safe and stable shelter. This piece is part of the “Just A Change” initiative, which seeks to make visible an urgent housing crisis that is often ignored by society.
